Using Guidelines as an Alternative to Slice Lines

Tutorials   ·   March 30, 2009

In Adobe Photoshop, guides appear as lines that float over the entire document. Slices, selections, and other tools will snap to a guideline, ensuring accuracy.

You may place new guides or reposition existing guides around any items in the document and create slices.
Slices may then be saved as individual .jpg or .gif files to be inserted into your web page.

Launch Photoshop, and then choose File > Open to open a .psd file.

Choose View from the top menu and select Show > Guides to ensure that any existing guide lines will be visible.

To place a new guide:

  1. If Rulers are not visible, choose View > Rulers (or press the Ctrl and R keys on your keyboard).
  2. Select the Move tool and drag down from the horizontal ruler to create a horizontal guide (Fig. 1), or drag out from the vertical ruler to create a vertical guide.

To move a guide: Select the Move tool and click and drag a guide to a new position.

To remove guides from the image:

  • To remove a single guide, drag the guide completely off the document window.
  • To remove all guides, choose View > Clear Guides.

To turn snapping to guides on or off choose View >Snap To >Guides
